My mother left me a collection of twelve porcelain figurines showing characters playing musical instruments. I knew that she had inherited them from her own grandmother who had brought them over from Europe. I thought they were charming in an old fashioned way but I really did not know what to do with them when my mother passed away. They did not fit in the modern home my wife and I built. A friend of us referred us to Edmond Thorn whose professional manner impressed us. He immediately confirmed that these were indeed Meissen porcelain figures and found us a private collector I Paris who could pay ready cash for these pieces. Edmond had them packed and expedited and the transaction was painless.

When my two sisters and I inherited our parents collection of paintings, little did we know what headaches lay ahead. For years, our father had bought paintings at auctions, from various dealers and people he met. As children we never paid much attention to what was going on, we only noted each new purchase on the walls of our flat in Knightsbridge which was fortunately big enough to house this ever-growing collection. When our father then our mother died , each one of us claimed the paintings that had been given to us in our childhood. But then we realised that they surely had very different values. We started to quarrel about ownership, how to get an evaluation where and when to sell the different works. Our husbands began to intervene and the family harmony was seriously threatened, to put it mildly.
Edmond Thorn appeared, providentially as we all agreed later. We knew that he had been renowned art dealer in Paris and then in New York. He discussed the various possibilities with the three of us (and our husbands) separately and together, managed to calm everyone down with great diplomacy and found the best solution for us all: each of us got to choose a picture of comparable value and the rest was put in the sale-room. Never could we have managed without Edmond Thorn’s admirable know-how and skills!

My step-father was a collector of extravagant objects: amongst them ostrich eggs, antique circus posters, writers’ autographs, old toys and Oriental erotic engravings. He kept them in glass cabinets and was very proud of them.
When he passed away, I really had no idea what to do or how to sell any of this. To sell each piece individually would have meant working full time and I could not see myself take time off business.
Fortunately, a friend introduced me to Edmond Thorn who took charge of the situation. The complexity provided a real challenge to him. There were over 200 objects in this collection and he found specialists and collectors for all of them, even the most bizarre. Little did I know that an early XIXth century sea captain’s log book could be so valuable as to be bought by a museum! I was extremely satisfied by the service provided by Monsieur Thorn, the ease in which he managed to take care of every aspect of the sales and the financial results he obtained.

My brother and I inherited a collection of stage costumes worn by our mother, a famous cabaret artist in Berlin in the 1930s. What to do with these pieces? My brother and I are no longer young, we have grown up grand-children who are computer experts and not remotely interested in their great-grandmother’s career, unfortunately. Nor are their parents, busy with their own lives. Reluctantly, we decided to sell them. We both live in small cities and had no idea of how to proceed. We heard about Eddie Thorn through a friend in New York State whom he had helped with some porcelain pieces. We sent him all the documentation we could find, he seemed positive he could do something so we decided to entrust him with our mother’s wardrobe. Satin dresses, ostrich plumes, fans, incredible hats, it was amazing. Eddie Thorn even sent us published articles in the German press about our dear mother, we had no idea how famous she had been. He found a collector specialized in Berlin cabaret who flew over to see us. After that, everything went smoothly, we were delighted and extremely grateful to Eddie Thorn.
